Grapevines of incredible realism and exquisite detail turn this silver cup and cover by Francis Nelme into an organic masterpiece. As the vines form the handles in a fully decorated twisting of branches, grapes and leaves, they also entwine the base, lower half and lid of the George II-era cup, almost overtaking the classical lines of the piece in a symphony of natural embellishment. As beautiful adornment and the engraved coat of arms and family motto, connected to the Knight family of Ireland, testify, this lovely cup is a work of master artistry, created for a most privileged patron. This is truly a rare and exceptional find. Excellent condition. Hallmarked London, 1735 11 ½" wide x 6 ½" deep x 13" high Francis Nelme was the son of Anthony Nelme, one of the most successful native English goldsmiths of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He apprenticed to his father from 1712 to 1719, and first entered his own mark in 1723. Like his father, his work reflects reflects a Huguenot influence. He ran his father business from the elder's Nelme's death in 1722 until 1739.
