Placido Costanzi is an elegant painter who first trained with Francesco Trevisani, then with Benedetto Luti. His style is in many ways derived from Sebastiano Conca, to whom the present painting was once attributed. This splendid bozzetto was first published by Anthony Clark in his revelatory article devoted to the Costanzi. He associated it with a commission for Queen Elisabetta Farnese, the consort of Philip V of Spain.
